Why Your Microwave Makes the Tastiest (and Fastest) Grilled Cheese Sandwiches

tosti

I think the grilled cheese sandwich is the perfect example of how you can transform something simple (a cheese sandwich) into something delicious. Crispy, buttery outside, soft cheese on the inside, your favorite sauce on the side… You don’t need anything else to be happy. Grilled cheese tips make us just as happy, which is why we were glad this tip came our way: put your grilled cheese sandwich in the microwave.

Quite a striking tip, if you ask me. Won’t your grilled cheese turn soggy in the microwave? Nope. If you use the microwave the right way in your grilled cheese-making process, you’ll only benefit from it.

40 seconds

Think of it this way. If you prepare your grilled cheese in a pan or in a sandwich press, both the bread and the cheese cook at the same time. That happens fairly slowly. If you put your grilled cheese (that is, your bread with cheese in between) in the microwave for 40 seconds first, only the cheese melts. After that, all you have to do is toast the bread in the pan. Your grilled cheese will be ready faster, and you’ll still have that crispy crust you’ve been craving. A win-win situation!

Grilled cheese in the microwave; it really works

Microwave first, then pan

40 seconds in the microwave. That’s it. While your cheese sandwich heats up in the appliance, heat your pan with butter until it’s nice and hot. The grilled cheese can go straight into the pan afterward to be fried. Extra tip: when you take your grilled cheese out of the microwave, the bottom will probably be the moistest part. The side that touched the microwave plate, in other words. Fry this side first in the pan. That will give you the crunchiest result.

Some people choose to toast their bread in the pan first, then add the cheese and put it in the microwave. Purely to melt the cheese, in other words. But that’s not recommended, because your crispy bread crust will actually turn soggy. So put it in the microwave first, then the pan.
