A frankfurter grilled cheese is absolutely delicious, and this is the proof
I really think grilled cheese is a fantastic dish, because you can take it in so many different directions — and it all remains fairly easy to make and ready in no time. I love making this chicken satay grilled cheese, for example, but this apple pie grilled cheese is also delicious as a sweet lunch. At FavorFlav, we love them so much that we’ve even put our ten favorites in a row… The frankfurter grilled cheese was the only one missing — and it definitely deserves a place on the list.
It’s the ultimate comfort food, perfect for a hangover, and it may not sound all that delicious… but just give it a try… The frankfurter grilled cheese has become a hit in our newsroom.
Our favorite recipes for a frankfurter grilled cheese
The recipe from Lekker en Simpel is exactly that: tasty and simple, because it’s ready in ten minutes. What do you need: frankfurters (obviously), slices of bread (I always find grilled cheese on white bread so much tastier than on brown bread, anyone else?), cheese, a red onion, and curry sauce or sweet chili sauce. The rest is very simple: spread the sauce on the slices of bread, halve the frankfurters lengthwise and place them on top along with the chopped onion, then add a slice of cheese and, hey presto — put the other slice of bread on top. Pop it under a sandwich grill (or in a pan, of course, that works too) and you’re done.

But Jumbo has also discovered the frankfurter grilled cheese and has a delicious recipe ready for us. This one is just a little messier to eat, but it really does look like a fully fledged lunch sandwich. You can serve this to your guests without any shame; they won’t know what hit them. Here too, you cut the frankfurters in half lengthwise, then place them on a slice of white bread with cheese, add another slice of cheese on top, and put the sandwich under the grill; and you’re done. Personally, I would still customize it with some mustard on the bread and some crispy fried onions and mayonnaise on top. But aside from that; this is a top-notch grilled cheese.
Will 2024 be the year of the comfort food grilled cheese? Sounds like a great idea to me, and this frikandel grilled cheese deserves to make a comeback too!
