Was Paracetamol always your best friend during flu season? From today on, the Flu Bomb is. This drink really is the bomb when you’re sick, weak and nauseous, or have a runny nose.

The Flu Bomb recipe

The recipe comes from Australian Barbara O’Neill. She came up with the drink and has since provided relief to an awful lot of sick people. The Flu Bomb consists of six powerful ingredients. You probably already have most of them at home. Here’s what you need:

  • Finely chopped garlic: as much as you like. Usually, one medium-sized clove is fine, but go with whatever feels right
  • A quarter teaspoon of finely chopped ginger
  • Cayenne pepper: as much as you like. It can be a pinch, but also a teaspoon
  • A teaspoon of honey
  • Juice of 1 lime
  • A drop of eucalyptus oil or tea tree oil (no more than that!)

Tea tree oil is somewhat easier to obtain than eucalyptus oil. In any case, it’s important to buy a good-quality oil that is no more than a year old. Also, don’t buy oil that is primarily intended for spreading fragrance; choose one that can be taken diluted. For example, ask for advice at Holland & Barrett.

Back to normal in no time

Mix the above ingredients with approximately 80 millilitres of hot water. Some people strain the mixture, but you don’t have to. According to creator Barbara O’Neill, you should drink this three times a day. She says that by day 3 or 4, you’ll be almost completely over your cold. But perhaps she’s underselling it a little. Quite a few people also say they felt much better far sooner:

  • ”I went to bed sick. When I got up the next morning, I felt even worse. I had all the symptoms of the flu; body aches, congestion, a runny nose, cough, fever and chills. I made Barbara’s Flu Bomb and felt better just a few hours later. Thank you, Barbara!”
  • ”This cleared up acute sinusitis within a day, after I had felt miserable for six days. After an hour, the drenching sweat and drowsiness arrived. I slept for two hours, and when I woke up, most of my symptoms had disappeared. My head was clear again and I could talk again.”

One extra tip if you have food poisoning and can’t keep anything down: drink this beverage, which you can simply buy at the supermarket. And when you can keep something down again, make chicken soup. It will make you feel better right away. You’ll make it through flu season just fine!
