Huh: aren’t McDonald’s fries vegetarian?

mcdonalds frietjes

Animal rights organization PETA was up in arms last week. Apparently, McDonald’s fries wouldn’t be vegan or vegetarian. And that’s pretty remarkable, because: they’re just fries, right? McDonald’s has since responded to the accusations itself.

According to TikTokers, McDonald’s fries are cooked in beef broth, which would obviously mean they’re no longer vegetarian — and PETA was furious about it. ‘Even McDonald’s FRIES aren’t suitable for vegetarians,’ the organization wrote on social media, accompanied by quite a few angry face emojis.

McDonald’s has responded

None of this is true, says McDonald’s. According to the company, the fries never come into contact with animal products at any point. Unfortunately, by then the damage had already been done to some extent, because many people reacted furiously to PETA’s social media posts. Many people said they ate vegan, and in that case McDonald’s already offers fairly limited choices; they could only eat the fries, and now even those were off-limits.

Buuut no need to stress: it’s all completely untrue. PETA still hasn’t posted a correction or a message saying that the fries are actually safe for vegans. Anyway, vegans and vegetarians can breathe a sigh of relief and happily head back to Maccie.
