Going out for drinks on a terrace—wonderful! Especially when the bill doesn’t give you a heart attack. The research was conducted by Firstmate Hospitality Consultants. In the 16 largest cities in the Netherlands, they headed to the central square and ordered the same things on the terrace each time: a cup of coffee, a cola, a beer (25cl) and a portion of 6 bitterballen. This allowed them to compile a list of the most expensive and cheapest terrace cities in the Netherlands.

Amsterdam is not the most expensive terrace city

It is no rocket science that Amsterdam does not come last on the list of the most expensive terrace cities. This is partly due to the sky-high terrace tax. In Amsterdam, you pay € 23.77 for your coffee, cola, beer and portion of bitterballen. What did surprise us, however, is that the capital is not at the top of the list. There is a Dutch city where you pay even more for this order.

The Hague is the most expensive

In the seat of government, they know how to get even more money out of your pocket. There, you pay € 25.02 for the same order on the terrace. If you want to avoid the expensive Randstad terraces, go to Leeuwarden. Here, you pay € 20.04 for this order. Now that’s a worthwhile sip of your drink.

Beer prices fluctuate

Notable: a beer in The Hague and Maastricht will quickly cost you € 4, while in Breda and Arnhem, a glass of pilsner costs € 3.45. An extra good reason to book a weekend in Breda or a weekend in Arnhem soon.
