Is a Wine Bottle Driving Through Bordeaux?

You’re scrolling through the internet when you see a video about Bordeaux, and in it a tram disguised as a wine bottle is slowly driving through the streets. Wait—are you seeing that right? Or have you looked too deeply into your glass?

That would be brilliant city marketing by Bordeaux: disguise a tram as a wine bottle and let it ring its way through the city centre. Because of course Bordeaux is the capital of French wine (and also a wonderful city for a weekend or a midweek break), and that wine could certainly use a little more positive PR. So what’s the story with that magnificent tram?

Waiting for the wine bottle

Unfortunately, it’s fake. The video was made by Ian Padgham, an American artist who lives in Bordeaux. He has made videos about the city before and works on commission for Nike, Disney and Sony. This clever man simply created an animation on his computer that looks so real that people in Bordeaux started waiting for the wine-bottle tram. Nope, just the blue trams that normally run there.

The transport company responded to all the messages and the video by remarking that a wine bottle like that would be rather difficult to drive.
