Many foodies’ childhood memories are a succession of culinary highlights: Grandma’s delicious vegetable soup, the smell of freshly baked currant buns at the weekend and Dad’s unparalleled casserole, which he could conjure up even at a scorching-hot campsite from the caravan’s tiny kitchen. You’ll never eat that well again, they sigh. Time for a reality check, guys: this is what it was REALLY like in the sixties and seventies. A tasty piece of crusty spambake, anyone?

Earlier, we dug up a few gems from the rich history of food, such as these thirty dishes that make you feel sorry for your parents. Still, certain dishes from the past can evoke a sense of nostalgia, such as those delicious deviled eggs at parties (always the first to disappear!) or one of those chemical dairy desserts from long, long ago.
