Thirsty tales

These are the grossest mixed drinks you used to drink before going out

breezer

Gross mixed drinks: bartenders and sommeliers regularly have to deal with the strangest drink requests. But, honestly: we and our colleagues at Amayzine also used to knock back plenty of gross mixed drinks. Read and shudder (and be honest, did you drink these too?)

Coebergh

Do you remember this one? The gross, sweet, red friend mixed with Cassis or Fanta that was guaranteed to trigger a vomiting attack? Berry gin liqueur—who comes up with that?

Breezer

The drink with perhaps the tackiest image of them all. In 2002, no less than thirty million liters were sold, so it’s no wonder that the NIGZ was concerned about increasing alcohol consumption among young people. The new word ‘breezerseks’ even appeared in Van Dale: sex in exchange for a Breezer or another little gift. But the sweet Breezers ultimately fell victim to their own success… because really, who still drinks this?!

Dropshot

Someone in the editorial office just admitted (ha!) that they still secretly really like this. I won’t name names.

B52

With a little flame on top, of course.

Goldstrike

This was definitely only for the real die-hards. Once bottles of Goldstrike (with gold leaf!) appeared on the table, you knew you really had to run hard. So. Many. Percent.

WKD

If you don’t know this one, you really had an overly respectable childhood.

Blue Curaçao

To roll around in your blue Smurf vomit halfway through the evening. Horrific.

Paardenkut

Apfelkorn + sparkling water = a horse’s private parts. The ideal drink for a rough carnival morning or après-ski party.

Pisang Ambon with orange juice

Poison green and seriously disgusting. An evening of ‘pisangen’ was guaranteed to produce fluorescent vomit.

Canei

The sweet white wine for beginners. What a little miss prim you were, huh. Or Lambrusco, another classic. You might as well hit yourself over the head with a hammer right away.

Passoa and orange juice

What? You had to get your daily vitamins in somehow, right?

Bacootje

Bacardi and cola. Particularly popular among men, because it wasn’t as sweet. But, erm, honestly, it was always a certain ‘type’ of man who really enjoyed a Baco, admit it.

Malibu and Chocomel

If this doesn’t make you puke, I don’t know what will.

Safari

You could mix it, but it was also perfectly fine to knock it back neat.

El Picu

Oi oi oi, your teeth almost fall out of your mouth just thinking about it.

Peach Tree

Do you remember this one? The peach liqueur? I actually quite liked it.

Smirnoff Ice

For anyone who wanted to leave the Br33z3r era far behind and naturally felt soooo much more grown-up and cooler.

Raketje

My favorite, back in the day. Pour a little Bacardi Razz into a glass, add orange soda, and finish it off with a bottle of Flügel for the color. Suddenly I feel fifty. Okay, fuck it, I’m making a Raketje this weekend. Who’s coming out with me?
