Is Waldkorn bread healthy? No, you’re being fooled

If you eat Waldkorn bread and think you’re doing something wonderfully healthy, you’re seriously mistaken. You might as well eat white bread without the crusts, because although a Waldkorn roll may look very wholesome, the truth is quite disappointing.

That delicious dark brown slice of bread with sunflower seeds and other healthy-looking things on top and mixed in — surely that must be good for you, right? That’s where you’re mistaken: Waldkorn was created as a brand by a large bakery, and it has nothing to do with health. The bread is made from wheat flour, just like white bread. Not a fibre to be found.
Suspicion
In the programme Keuringsdienst van Waarde, an artisan baker shows what wholemeal bread looks like: quite light, actually. ‘You should be suspicious of bread that’s browner than this,’ says the baker. ‘The grain simply isn’t any browner than this.’ So how does Waldkorn get its dark brown colour? By mixing cocoa powder into the flour, or by adding roasted malt.
Absurdity
The television programme also gave the spokesperson for the bakery company that developed Waldkorn the opportunity to speak. It’s mainly about the taste, says the spokesperson. There is also Waldkorn maize, a yellower bread, as well as Waldkorn oat and trispelti, which are lighter in colour. So here’s the bottom line: if you like Waldkorn, just eat it. But if you want to eat healthy bread, you should buy wholemeal bread and simply leave this kind of nonsense on the supermarket shelf.
