It has been researched: orange tompouces are the most popular thing to eat on King’s Day
Two years ago, Master Baker Robèrt van Beckhoven came up with orange tompouces especially for King’s Day. Now, that in itself isn’t remarkable, but this was: you could only pick them up at the drive-thru. Because corona. Thank God those kinds of scenes are now behind us, and you can simply buy your orange tompouces from the pastry chef, bakery or supermarket again. Because it has been researched: on King’s Day, we want to eat orange tompouces en masse.

King’s Day classic: orange tompouce
When it comes to the most sought-after item at the flea market, the Dutch turn out to be real foodies: food and drinks lead the top five, followed by games, household goods, books and art. According to the research, we prefer to sink our teeth into an orange tompouce: 41% of Dutch people say this is the tastiest King’s Day treat. That puts the puff-pastry dessert ahead of beer, bitterballen and orange bitters, among other things.
AH orange tompouces
We haven’t spotted them at HEMA yet, but you can already buy orange tompouces at Albert Heijn. For 3.50 euros, you get a box of four. Their regular tompouce came out on top in our supermarket tompouce test, so with a bit of luck this version will be a winner too. Orange velvet over crisp, crackling layers that crunch all the way into the soft centre… sounds promising already!
