Jonnie and Thérèse Boer of De Librije*** star in documentary series: The Succession
From 16 February, we can enjoy the six-part documentary series The Succession on Omroep MAX. In this series, you get a behind-the-scenes look at the iconic De Librije restaurant in Zwolle. The restaurant, which has been shining with three Michelin stars for years, is at a crucial point. After two decades of working incredibly hard, Jonnie and Thérèse Boer are gradually stepping back, while the next generation – their children Jimmie and Isabelle and chef Nelson Tanate – prepares to continue the family business.
The future of De Librije
Jonnie, Thérèse, Isabelle, Jimmie and Nelson are followed for a year during this phase of the succession. The series follows their personal and professional development as they take on the challenges of the family business. It offers an intimate look at the family dynamic, as well as at the world of gastronomy at the very highest level.
De Librije recently took third place in La Liste, the prestigious ranking of the best restaurants in the world. A wonderful recognition of their years of hard work and their undeniable influence on the culinary world. Can Jonnie and Thérèse really let go of their life’s work? And how will they secure the future of their beloved De Librije?
The Succession offers a special look at the ins and outs of their restaurants. At the same time, it is a universal story about the transfer of a family business from one generation to the next.
Keeping three stars
The first five episodes are told from the perspective of one of the five main characters. Daughter Isabelle gains experience at their restaurant in Bonaire and struggles with the question of whether she still wants to come to Zwolle. In Bangkok, Jimmie is doing an internship and searching for greater independence. Nelson learned to cook from his Molukan aunt and is doing everything he can to stay at the top. In the sixth episode, everything comes together and it becomes clear how the entire family is committed to retaining the three stars.
Jonnie Boer’s avocado
Those who want to experience the taste of De Librije at home can make Jonnie Boer’s famous avocado themselves. He doesn’t smash the much-loved avocado, but roasts it and gives it a dressing with a subtle kick. This special dish is not only easy to make, but also a feast for the eyes and a treat on your plate.
