Jumbo Easter Stollen Removed from Stores: Can Cause Serious Harm
Warning! Jumbo is recalling its La Place Luxe Kleine Feeststol with Amarena Cherries, Pistachios & Hazelnuts. Specifically, the 400-gram Easter stollen with an expiration date between March 6 and 12, 2024. Excessive levels of Aflatoxin and Ochratoxin A were found in this stollen. In high amounts, these substances can be harmful to your health. The supermarket is therefore urging customers to return this Easter stollen if they happened to enthusiastically bring one home.
It will be a few more weeks before Easter, but as far as supermarkets are concerned, we have been celebrating the holiday for months. Literally. The first Easter eggs were spotted on supermarket shelves as early as January 2. Now that we are almost reaching the 40 days after Carnival, the Easter selection at many supermarkets continues to expand. With Easter stollen, for example. The La Place Luxe Kleine Feeststol with Amarena Cherries, Pistachios & Hazelnuts from Jumbo sounds delicious, but I’m glad I haven’t brought one home just yet.
Harmful substances
Excessive levels of Aflatoxin and Ochratoxin A were found in the Easter stollen—specifically in the pistachios. If you consume large amounts of these substances, they can cause long-term damage to your health. They are fungal toxins: waste products produced by soil fungi. According to Het Voedingscentrum, Aflatoxin is mainly found on nuts, grains, herbs and legumes. Ochratoxin A is also found on grains, but also in coffee and raisins (we previously wrote about heavily contaminated raisins..) In the case of the Jumbo Easter stollen, these substances were found in the pistachios in the stollen.
What harmful effect can this have on your health? Well, if we are to believe Het Voedingscentrum, it is not very good. Consuming too much Aflatoxin can cause acute liver damage. Regular consumption of this substance could even cause liver cancer in the long term. Regular consumption of Ochratoxin A can cause kidney damage. This substance may also be carcinogenic. Yikes. Not exactly a delightful Easter celebration. Of course, we are talking about very high and very regular intake here, but better safe than sorry.
