Lidl adapts prawn cracker packaging: this is an expression of racism

Lidl’s prawn cracker packaging always featured a drawing of a man with a drooping moustache and a conical straw hat, but the supermarket has changed it. The image was an offensive caricature that advocacy group Asian Raisins protested against.

The triangular straw hat was originally worn by workers in China. And the drooping moustache is a caricature used mainly in films and comic books for villains. Organization Asian Raisins brought this to the attention of supermarket chain Lidl. ‘I can very well imagine that people without an Asian background don’t understand this,’ the organization’s spokesperson tells AD. ‘If you are not associated with it, you cannot understand it either. However, it is the small details that can lead to racism and discrimination.’

No problem
No problem for Lidl: they have adapted the packaging. The images of the prawn crackers in the online shop still show the old packaging, but the prawn crackers on supermarket shelves have already been changed. The same look, but without the drawing of the man. The organization is pleased and hopes that other supermarkets and food companies will also take a critical look at their products.
