10 Cheap Lidl Favorites

Shopping at Lidl isn’t as cheap as it was a few years ago. But it’s still sometimes an oasis of inexpensive finds (just take a look at the Lidl deals). You just have to know where to find them. Do you already know these cheap ass products?

Kid-friendly look-alike

FavorFlav’s Bo is wildly enthusiastic about Lidl’s milk & chocolate bars. ‘You know those Kinder chocolate bars? According to Bo, these taste exactly the same, but you pay much less for them. Two packs cost €1.49.

Vanilla donut

We wrote about it earlier in the article 10 Cheap Supermarket Favorites, but the glazed vanilla donut with vanilla filling simply deserves a little more shine. For just 0.59 cents, this delicious—we repeat: delicious—vanilla donut with glaze and vanilla filling is yours.

Mini apple pie

FavorFlav’s Sharon can’t stop talking about Lidl’s mini apple pies. ‘They’re exactly the right size for one person and contain everything that makes an apple pie such a successful pastry for me. And you pay just 0.89 cents for such a mini apple pie, so you really can’t beat that by baking one yourself.’

Skyr

Lidl has a dairy line with Icelandic-style yogurt, Skyr, in all kinds of different flavors. Bo’s favorite is the orange-vanilla Skyr yogurt drink. Bo: ‘Good for the protein and so delicious. And this drink costs less than a euro. Definitely worth trying!’

Tiramisu

Another tip from Sharon. Why is Lidl tiramisu such a huge hit? ‘The mascarpone is soft and spread exactly the way I like it (read: not too thick). But the very best part: this tiramisu contains alcohol. Ladyfingers soaked in alcohol. And all for €3.25. Absolutely freaking delicious.’

Cheese croissant/cheese twist

Connoisseurs know: Lidl sells irresistible cheese croissants and cheese twists. Bo sings the praises of the cheese croissant: ‘Well-filled and perfectly baked. I haven’t wanted another one since I tried this.’ Our Snackspert is lyrical about Lidl’s cheese twist: ‘Who can say that for less than a euro, you’ve genuinely enjoyed yourself for minutes? That’s rare, but let me tell you something: it is possible. For 80 cents, you can get this Lidl cheese twist and believe me, it might just be the best cheese snack I’ve ever had from a supermarket’s bakery section. The twist is nice and long, extra thick, truly Champions League level compared with other cheese twists from certain supermarkets. They didn’t skimp on the cheese, nor on the dough—in fact, it’s absolutely perfect.’

Chocolate rice cakes

Getting a little bored with that boring rice cake? Then you should try these chocolate-covered rice cakes. A delicious snack for 0.95 cents. My advice: always keep one in your bag.

Snacking tomatoes

A frequently heard slogan: ‘Lidl is the best supermarket for fruit and vegetables.’ Bo: ‘Whenever I wolf down another bucket of snacking tomatoes—I can’t stop eating them, they’re so delicious, those little red beauties—I always think of that slogan. And €1.49 for such a huge bucket? Great deal!’

Popcorn

We love popcorn, salty or sweet or salty-sweet—it all goes down the hatch. And Lidl’s popcorn is another bull’s-eye. Lovely to munch on, and 0.79 cents is a real bargain.

Pudding with whipped cream

Bo: ‘My guilty pleasure for Saturday night: one of those cups of vanilla and chocolate pudding with whipped cream. Ultimate indulgence for practically nothing—35 cents?! Life doesn’t get better.’
