Life hack: making a grilled cheese sandwich in a toaster

A golden-brown, crispy grilled cheese sandwich with a gooey inside of melted cheese is the ultimate lunch, snack and hangover breakfast. Don’t have a sandwich press at home? No problem! Because you can also make delicious grilled cheese sandwiches with a toaster: hack!

From hamburger to frikandel grilled cheese sandwiches and from a French Melt to a deliciously sweet apple pie grilled cheese; with the filling between two slices of bread, you can go in any direction. However, if you’re making a grilled cheese sandwich with your toaster, it’s best to keep things nice and simple. After all, you don’t want to end up with burnt toppings in your toaster (I speak from experience..)
Here’s how to do it
To make a grilled cheese sandwich with a toaster, this is the golden trick: turn the toaster on its side. Then place a slice of bread spread with butter (or mayonnaise), cheese and ham in one slot, and a slice of bread with cheese in the other for extra cheesyness. Set the timer to 3 minutes and wait until the slices pop out of the toaster, then place them on top of each other and voilà, your grilled cheese sandwich is ready.

Tip!
Advantages? You’re guaranteed a non-burnt grilled cheese sandwich and you don’t have to keep a close eye on it or flip it as you would with a pan-fried grilled cheese sandwich. Do note that the slices can shoot out quite forcefully from some toasters. Prevent melted-cheese messes and turn the toaster towards the backsplash so they don’t crash onto the floor. Grilled cheese it!
