Make your own cola: this is how you do it

Puff pastry, ketchup or stock are the kind of things we prefer to buy ready-made rather than make ourselves. Just like cola, because making it yourself; how do you do that?

That is something we will never know entirely, because the Coca-Cola recipe has been the best-kept secret in the world for years. But for anyone who would still like to try making it themselves, or is curious about what exactly goes into it, we are sharing a little recipe here to get you started.
How to make your own cola
- Grind the spices in a mortar and pestle to release the flavours.
- Heat the coconut oil together with the spices in a small saucepan. Once hot, turn off the heat and let the flavours infuse for about half an hour.
- Then strain the oil through a sieve. Since the rest of the cola consists of water, it is important that this spiced oil mixes with water. To do this, whisk the oil together with the alcohol in a bowl until it is completely emulsified, then set aside.
- Now melt the sugar in a pan until it becomes a light-coloured caramel. Add the water and stir well until the caramel has dissolved completely. Then add the remaining sugar, lime juice, citric acid and the spiced oil.
- If you want the cola to have a dark colour as well, you can add a drop of black food colouring, but this is optional.
- Let the syrup cool completely.
- For a large glass of cola (330 ml), you only need two teaspoons of the syrup. Top it up with sparkling water and your homemade cola is ready to drink.
