McDonald’s comes up with a new, futuristic drive-thru
Given that McDonald’s menu is practically perfect (this is coming from a loyal fan who has ordered nothing but the Big Mac for years), they don’t need to be very innovative when it comes to menu items. But of course, you do need to keep innovating a little and move with the times. So what is McDonald’s doing? They’ve designed a fascinating, futuristic drive-thru, which they are now going to test.
The drive-thru is becoming increasingly popular, which means people have to wait longer and longer: since 2019, waiting times have increased by 45 percent. Quite inconvenient, considering that this is precisely not the idea behind a drive-thru: you want your food quickly.
Will this be the future of drive-thrus?
Maccie’s going to test their new design in Fort Worth, Texas, in the coming period. This new drive-thru consists of a conveyor belt — where you can immediately pick up an item of your choice (although I am curious about the temperature of those products), the option to place your order in advance and a place where you can collect your order yourself. Honestly: it gives me a bit of a buffet vibe, and that isn’t necessarily positive. Sure, it remains fast food, but this is taking things a little too far again.
And in this new concept, they also need fewer employees, because everything is ordered using computers; either via the app (if you want to order in advance), or via a computer upon arrival. And collecting your food also happens without contact with employees. I wonder if we’ll also get these futuristic drive-thrus in the Netherlands…
