McDonald’s gives applicants $50 just for showing up

It may be hard to imagine, in the middle of a pandemic where many people have lost their jobs, but Maccie just can’t seem to find employees. In fact, apparently they were already struggling with that before corona. Fortunately, this isn’t a worldwide problem, but mainly one in Florida. To be more precise: Tampa, Florida.

That’s where Blake Casper owns 60 locations (a case of #lifegoals), and he has been struggling to find good employees for decades. It’s now gotten so bad that he gives every applicant who merely shows up a $50 reward. Easy money, right?
Even that free $50 fails to attract applicants
“At this point, if we can’t keep our drive-thrus moving, then I’ll pay $50 for an interview,” said Casper, who has since started advertising his incentive for job interviews. The lack of applicants is supposedly due to the reopening of all businesses in America (many companies are looking for employees), as well as the fact that unemployed people are now receiving better financial support and can therefore afford to be choosier. At the same time, business at Maccie is big and booming, and they desperately need those extra employees.
Interestingly enough, Casper has noticed that the $50 doesn’t really make much of a difference, while letting people apply via WhatsApp or SMS does help (rather lazy than tired, I guess?). Bonuses help too, but still not enough: last week he hired 115 new people. Sounds like a lot, but apparently it isn’t enough. That’s why he’s considering raising his minimum hourly wage by another dollar, to $13 an hour. That’s $4 above Florida’s minimum wage. Well, you’ve convinced me—bring on this summer job. Unlimited free Big Macs, and we have a deal.
