Oh no, this item will probably never return to the McDonald’s menu

If there’s one thing that’s always consistent in terms of both quality and selection, it’s McDonald’s. Of course, there are sometimes special burgers that – despite the high demand – don’t return, such as the McRib. But in general, the menu has really stayed the same for decades. However, that changed last April at McDonald’s in the United States. Maybe you didn’t even notice… Because I, for one, have never ordered it there. But that won’t be possible anymore either; this item will probably never return.

We could find it on the menu for thirty years, but now the fun is really over. Okay, enough suspense – of course you want to know what you’ll never be able to order again. It’s… the salad. So it’s official: in many countries, it’s now hardly possible to get a healthy meal at McDonald’s. A salad was already just as unhealthy as a Big Mac once you poured the dressing over it, but still.
Why this particular item?
Not because McDonald’s has anything against healthy items on the menu, of course. The main reason is logistics: they want to order fewer ingredients. For the salad, for example, they had to buy different types of lettuce than the ones used on the burgers. The tomatoes were also different from those we get on our burgers. So, long story short: every ingredient for the salads had to be ordered separately. That became a bit too much hassle for something that wasn’t ordered very often.
Incidentally, there’s another item we haven’t seen return in many countries since April: the McDonald’s breakfast. This is supposedly simply because it wasn’t being ordered. Well, I can understand that… After all, I only ever buy a Big Mac meal, and otherwise I would hardly know what specials they have on the menu.
But let’s end on a positive note: in the Netherlands, breakfast items are still available, and the Grilled Chicken salad, sweet and spicy, is also still on the menu here.
