McDonald’s raises the prices of their menu (but luckily not in the Netherlands)

Many companies have been hit hard by corona, and of course something has to be done about that. Completely understandable. But I thought Maccie was doing really well… So why this? Is McDonald’s not doing well after all, or do they simply want to see more money? Because yes; more money will be requested.

I should say that McDonald’s does not often raise its prices; that is also what they are known for: consistent quality and consistent prices. And often still delicious euro deals that you simply have to grab (otherwise you are stealing from your own wallet, of course).

But now the time has come: prices are going up. As of January 1. For which item? One that is much-loved by many, namely the Happy Meal. Will we get extra toys? Or will those toys become even more exclusive? Small chance. Because the costs for the franchisees remain the same.

It works like this: for decades, McDonald’s has had a particular subsidy scheme for its franchisees, which allowed the Happy Meal to remain as cheap as possible. And that subsidy… is being scrapped. Incidentally, not necessarily because of corona, but simply because it saves a lot of money at headquarters.

Franchisees are—understandably—not happy. Corona is already tough enough for everyone, and then they also want to charge more for the Happy Meal! INSANE. As of January 1, it will officially be an Unhappy Meal.

One bright spot for all Happy Meal fans: we have received confirmation that prices in the Netherlands will remain the same.
