Move over Moscow mule, the paloma is here

Does your knowledge of Mexican drinks stop at tequila, mezcal and margaritas? I get it. But not for much longer, because the paloma is here and believe me, you want it.

Anyone who thought the margarita was Mexico’s national cocktail is mistaken. It’s the paloma. And fi-nal-ly, this divine mix of grapefruit and tequila is gaining ground. What am I saying? There is even an International Paloma Day (May 22).
And rightly so. Because this cocktail isn’t just delightfully summery orange-pink, but also wonderfully fresh, sour, bitter and smoky. How is it that this drink hasn’t been on every menu for ages?!
Grapefruit soda
The answer is simple: “Grapefruit soda wasn’t available in the Netherlands for a very long time,” cocktail guru Tess Posthumus explains. “Yes, there’s Ting, a sweet Jamaican grapefruit soda that you can buy at an Asian supermarket. But the real deal has only recently become available, thanks to Three Cents, three Greek guys who started making it.”
Moscow mule
Getting bored of your Moscow mule? Then the paloma could well be your perfect replacement. Tess: “The recipes are very similar. You replace the vodka with tequila or mezcal (which is a little smokier), use grapefruit juice and grapefruit soda instead of ginger beer, and both contain a little lime.”
And what should you eat with it? Latin American food, of course! Though I can tell you from experience that it also goes very well with the BBQ.
