Never Burnt Satay Skewers Again with This Week’s Tip

Have you ever experienced this at a BBQ: you’re just about to bite into a delicious piece of chicken from a satay skewer, and the entire blackened wooden skewer snaps in half? Or, even worse, a splinter comes loose because the skewer has burned and is all too eager to lodge itself in the inside of your cheek?

We definitely don’t want that, because it ruins a large part of the BBQ fun. So what can you do about it, at least when barbecuing with wooden skewers rather than metal ones? Give the skewers a pre-treatment, and it’s super simple:
Oh, so easy
The best way to prevent satay skewers from burning on the grill of the BBQ is to soak them in water first. The easiest way to do this is in a baking dish large enough for the skewers to lie flat. Warm or cold water doesn’t make much difference, but simply make sure all the skewers are submerged.
Ideal soaking time
And how long should you soak them? Half an hour. Ten minutes would already help, but if you remember in time, it’s best to give them half an hour; then you can be sure they’ve absorbed enough water and won’t burn on the BBQ.
Relaxed barbecuing
If all goes well, at most only the narrowest tip of the skewer will burn a little, but that’s manageable. In any case, the satay skewer can no longer snap in half, or release splinters into the meat. Minimal effort, major payoff!
