Next-level cheese sandwich

The ultimate Dutch cheese sandwich is a favourite in the editorial office, provided it’s made with the best ingredients. Perfect as it is, but for anyone looking for a change, here’s how to pimp it.

Garden cress
At the top of the list because it’s eaten most often. With a generous spread of Amora mayonnaise, which contains plenty of mustard. Garden cress also has a bit of a kick, which combined with the mayo makes this version the ultimate cheese sandwich for us.
Sambal
Best with slightly more mature cheese, so its flavour doesn’t get lost against the spicy sambal. Delicious with a slice of cucumber for some freshness.
Alfalfa
Crunchy and fresh, and whenever we put alfalfa on our cheese sandwich, we immediately add a huge pile. Best of all with a spread of coarse mustard.
Pesto
Italian pride meets Dutch sandwich. You do need to make your own pesto, but once you have a container in the fridge, you can eat endless sandwiches.
Jam
FavorFlav’s Marieke was already eating the precursor to the cheeseboard with quince jelly as a child. In her eyes, a sandwich with grass cheese and strawberry jam was the ultimate sweet-and-savoury combination. We don’t know whether it’s still as delicious, but give it a try if you’re feeling lucky.
