Oh no: fast-food prices keep rising

Energy prices are sky-high, the hospitality industry has been through a difficult period, staff shortages are painfully severe and transportation is expensive. In short: eating out will probably cost more in the near future. Fast food in particular is becoming pricey, writes magazine Tasting Table.

Hamburgers and fries have become 8 percent more expensive over the past year, reports the BLS, the US agency that tracks employment statistics. According to the New York Times, that is the biggest price increase in the past twenty years. This is particularly painful for low-income families, explains Tasting Table. A healthy meal is usually more expensive than a bag of fries with a hamburger, especially in neighborhoods in US cities where there is no supermarket anywhere nearby.
Interest rates
So those prices will rise even further in the near future. Inflation—nothing can be done about it. They are generally expected to fall again when interest rates rise slightly, Reuters writes. Tasting Table expects fast-food prices to fall somewhat again in the second half of the year. Labor-market shortages will not yet have been resolved, nor will the problems in the transport sector, so fast-food prices probably will not return to their previous level anytime soon.
