Oh no: legendary Cheers bar is closing!
Cheers is the legendary bar owned by former baseball player Sam Malone, where waitress Carla came to grumble, her colleague Diane tried to flirt with Sam, and regulars Norm and Cliff kept their stools warm. Can you still picture the café? Ah, nostalgia… That’s coming to an end, because Cheers in Boston, which the series was based on, is closing for good.
Cheers was on television from 1982 to 1993. The entire series took place in a bar where everybody knows your name. The series was a huge success: a total of 275 episodes were recorded and broadcast, and endlessly rerun, all over the world.
Which bar will make it?
The Cheers Replica Bar was one of Boston’s most famous tourist attractions. The owners recreated parts of the set in their café, making it look exactly like it did on television. The bar was a huge success for twenty years, but the owner recently announced that so many financial problems had arisen as a result of the coronavirus measures in the US that the bar was forced to close its doors. Boston Magazine immediately wrote: ‘If the Cheers café can’t make it through this crisis, which bar can?’
No longer open
The situation in the Netherlands is certainly not easy for hospitality business owners, but things aren’t exactly great in America either. There are no government subsidies at all, and sixty percent of restaurants do not expect to reopen. The current owner of Cheers says: ‘The Covid-19 pandemic, combined with no support whatsoever from our landlord, means that we cannot overcome this setback.’
