Oh yes, you want this: the sushi taco (and the cities where you can already buy it)

sushi taco

Eke Bosman, better known as Instagram phenomenon @snackspert, ate his first frikandel as a baby, hates vlammetjes, has already devoured at least 1,500 burgers in his lifetime, suspects there’s more mayonnaise in his body than blood, and shares his best and worst snack reviews on FavorFlav. This time, he licks his fingers clean over the sushi taco and beef croquettes with chimichurri from Lidl. But without the sweet potato fries, please…

Sushi taco from Oh My Sushi, Amsterdam and Haarlem

Sorry for this really gross photo—it looks like an unsolicited picture someone sent, but nothing is different: this is a sushi taco from Oh My Sushi in Amsterdam and Haarlem. Look at it this way: it’s basically a sushi roll that hasn’t been cut into pieces, and the edge is deep-fried really well, partly thanks to the breadcrumbs. None of this sounds particularly spectacular, but I do want to say that it was a delicious new experience. The salmon was my favorite; it had a slightly less dark flavor than the chicken version—the teriyaki was more dominant there than the Japanese mayonnaise, which was nicely balanced with the salmon. Add some spring onion and cucumber, and you’ve got the freshness covered. Just a great success, you know, especially on a Monday. And now I’m ordering sushi. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Sweet potato fries from G’woon

The sweet potato fries from g’woon (available at Flink, Coop, Jan Linders, Picnic and other supermarkets) are a tricky one. Sure, I could tell you a whole story about why McDonald’s is closing on the day Queen Elizabeth is buried, but that wouldn’t help you—and especially not because there’s no connection whatsoever to these sweet potato fries. But I find these difficult, because even though I cooked them well in the air fryer, I still found them a little disappointing. I thought they were too thin, but was that down to my air-fryer skills? Because it’s a well-known problem in every household: making excellent sweet potato fries. But, honestly, I have to say that you can find much better ones. Such as the fresh sweet potato fries from Albert Heijn—absolutely delicious both from the oven and the air fryer. They’re also much thicker, whereas these are as thin as a cheap pen. The flavor is fine, but it doesn’t really come through. A minor disappointment in the end. ⭐️⭐️

Croquettes with chimichurri herbs from Lidl

Look, I may have absolutely torn Lidl apart over those damn disgusting cheddar sticks, but it’s still a great supermarket that at least often experiments with snacks. And that’s great, because it means you come across unexpected gems every now and then. Like these croquettes with chimichurri herbs. WOW! This green sauce made with fresh herbs (oregano, parsley, chives, etc.) is already delicious with grilled meat, but it’s insanely good in a croquette too. Yes, it’s also wonderfully salty, but honestly, every bite is a party here. It’s a bit like Kudus’s goal yesterday—an absolute bullseye. As far as I’m concerned, they could still work on the crispy coating—I’d prefer panko as the base, but I understand that it’s a little more expensive and difficult to have made on a large scale. But as far as I’m concerned, this is definitely a keeper, and a tip for hospitality entrepreneurs who have unusual croquettes on their menus: try making a croquette with chimichurri herbs in it too. Incredible. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ ½
