Oktoberfest-goers furious about the high price of beer
I always really wanted to go there one day, but since turning 30 I’m afraid I won’t survive it: Oktoberfest. The party where it’s not about the line-up, the food, or even the people, but about one thing only: BEER. And as much of it as possible. This year was no different, although for some people it wasn’t all fun and games.
I can’t imagine thinking that Oktoberfest would be a cheap day out in the first place (given the amount of beer being consumed), but this year things were particularly outrageous, as can be seen on TikTok.
Beer and food were both seriously expensive
You don’t go to Oktoberfest for a culinary masterpiece, but of course you do need a good base for all those liters of beer. And those bases were pretty expensive too: on TikTok, you can see that a simple breakfast costs 19 euros per person — and I find that really ridiculously expensive when you see what they get for it. ‘Fortunately’ for this TikToker, she gets some free beer because someone works for the organization; otherwise you’d be even more out of pocket: a mug of beer costs €13.50. In total, she therefore spent just €71 over the entire day, which I think is a pretty good score.
Strikingly enough, prices vary considerably during Oktoberfest. In Munich (where this TikToker was), you pay the most — but that’s also because the real Oktoberfest takes place there, of course — and even there prices vary quite a bit. The prices aren’t set by the city itself; each pub is allowed to decide for itself. That difference can be quite substantial: between €12.60 and €14.90, if we are to believe the Oktoberfest website. In 2019, it was still €10.90, which I think is quite a steep increase. Oktoberfest is therefore being called ‘a party for the wealthy elite’ on TikTok…
