Piece of cake: 5 cakes in 5 minutes

Do you have two left hands when it comes to baking? Believe us, even you can make these simple cakes. It’s simply a matter of mixing, putting the batter in the baking tin and sliding it into the oven. The active work takes five minutes, and then you can wait for the result on the sofa.

1. Old-fashioned farmhouse cake
An old-fashioned farmhouse cake, just like Grandma makes. Always a winner, and it couldn’t be easier. This recipe literally involves mixing all the ingredients in a bowl, pouring the batter into a baking tin and, an hour later, you’ll have your light and airy farmhouse cake. A nice bonus: the house will smell delicious too.

1.Preheat the oven to 175°C and grease a baking tin. Mix 200 g unsalted butter, 200 g sugar and the seeds of 1 vanilla pod in the mixing bowl until smooth. Add 4 eggs one at a time and mix well, adding the next egg only once the previous one has been fully incorporated.
2. Stir in 200 g self-raising flour. Finally, add 2 tbsp milk and a pinch of salt and stir the batter well.
3. Pour the batter into the greased baking tin and bake the cake on a rack in the centre of the oven for approx. 55–65 minutes. Immediately turn the cake out of the tin after baking and leave to cool on a rack.

2. Blackberry cake
This super-simple blackberry cake by Samuel Levie is in the oven within five minutes and on the table within half an hour. Add a scoop of vanilla ice cream and leave it at that.

3. Jaffa cakes
Okay, these little cakes still need to be decorated with marmalade and chocolate after baking, so perhaps you’ll be busy for seven minutes. The only challenging part, if you can call it that, is making three different layers. Very easy layers, though. Still perfect for baking beginners.

4. Brownie cake
We all know brownies, but have you ever eaten brownie cake? It’s just a little lighter, yet still sticky. Another case of putting everything in one bowl and stirring. Even a child could do it!

5. Key Lime Pie
Okay, this pie may take a little longer than five minutes, but it’s just as easy. A pie you don’t even have to bake—how could it go wrong? Ideal, right?
