Russia is the largest country in the world, covering an area of 17,098,246 square kilometers. It is home to 146,270,330 people, if you include Crimea. You would expect there to be some creative types among them who can arrange beautiful plates of food. But these photos of dishes from Russia are nevertheless a little disappointing in that regard…
Russia is brimming with art and culture, just think of writers such as Leo Tolstoy, Fyodor Dostoevsky and Anton Chekhov, and the world-famous Bolshoi Ballet. But what about its gastronomy? Sure, a few typical Russian dishes such as plov (rice with vegetables) and borscht (beetroot soup) are somewhat known in the West too, and can be washed down quite nicely with a glass of vodka. Things get truly shocking (but still enjoyable!) when you take a look at these food photos.
Food photography is an art
Granted: photographing food is an art in which lighting and composition play a major role. Those aspects are certainly fine in these Russian food photos, but the dishes shown in them are not exactly appetizing. Fish with Smarties and cake sprinkles? A little dog made of luncheon meat, with a bell pepper tongue? Although, those chicken drumettes… no, sorry, this really isn’t acceptable.
