Real life: I don’t date men who can’t cook

Lilly is single and looking forward to meeting a nice man this year. But it can only become something if he knows his way around the kitchen. Lilly: ‘Men who can’t cook are a red flag for me. That’s a real turn-off.’

‘I simply don’t understand it. How can you be an adult, with a job, a house, perhaps a car – and not know how to make a decent meal? How is that possible? You really don’t have to be a Michelin chef; I don’t expect sea bass on a bed of saffron risotto. But don’t look at me as if I’m asking you to perform surgery when I suggest that you cook for once.
Ready-made sauce from a jar
Seriously, how difficult is cooking? It’s not higher mathematics. It’s not nuclear physics. It’s… chopping onions and tomatoes, bringing water to the boil, adding a few herbs… Anyone can do that, right? Well, apparently not. I’ve been dating for a while now and it’s unbelievable how many men still can’t fry an egg, let alone make a simple tomato sauce. I simply can’t take it anymore. All those men who proudly say they ‘can make pasta’ – and then mean throwing cooked penne into a ready-made sauce from a jar. That’s not cooking. That’s laziness, packaged in a shiny glass jar.
‘I’m not much of a kitchen prince’
And then there are the excuses: ‘I’ve never learned.’ What do you mean, never learned? You learned how to drive, didn’t you? Or how to do your job? You can Google how to make an omelette, can’t you? But no, it’s always ‘I’m not much of a kitchen prince’ or ‘That’s more your thing.’ It really puts me off. It’s not even about the food itself. It’s about the attitude. Cooking shows that you take initiative, that you understand relationships are a two-way street. That you can create something with your own hands and be proud of it. It’s attractive. More than that: it’s sexy! If you cook a delicious meal for me, you show that you’re happy to put in a little extra effort for me. But someone who can’t cook? That’s like saying: ‘I’ve decided I’m not going to contribute. You do everything.’
The way to the heart is through the stomach
And you know what’s worst? Men who say: ‘But I’ll get us something to eat.’ It sounds very considerate, because you’re not letting me starve. But buying food isn’t the same as cooking. Cooking is how you show love for each other. You make an effort, the house fills with delicious aromas, and making a meal for someone and eating it together is one of the most intimate and social things you can do together, in my opinion. ‘The way to the heart is through the stomach’ is a well-known saying for a reason.
So yes, I want someone who can cook. If you can’t, then I’m not interested.’
