Remarkable: this new Starbucks overlooks North Korea
Want to drink a latte while looking out over one of the most closed-off countries in the world? You can now do so at the newest Starbucks in South Korea! This coffee spot in the city of Gimpo, near the border with North Korea, is one of the few places where you can catch a glimpse of the mysterious country across the way.
The newest Starbucks location with a view in South Korea is situated in an observation tower on the border with North Korea, about 30 kilometers northwest of Seoul and just one kilometer from the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ). This is one of the most heavily armed borders in the world. From the terrace, you can look out over peaceful Gaepung County and the iconic Songaksan mountain range in the distance.
Tourist hotspot
North and South Korea are technically still at war, as no peace treaty was ever signed to bring an end to the Korean War from 1950 to 1953. The fighting was halted at the time by an armistice. This Starbucks is part of the city of Gimpo’s plans to transform the area into a tourist hotspot, with the aim of becoming a symbol of peace and harmony. Remarkable, considering that in January North Korean leader Kim Jong-un declared that his country would no longer pursue reconciliation and reunification with South Korea.
And yes, with just 30 seats, there is no guarantee you’ll get a spot, but if you’re lucky, you’ll drink your latte with an iconic view of mysterious North Korea. So if you’re in South Korea anytime soon, put a trip to this Starbucks on your list. It’s coffee with a view you won’t soon forget!
