Chinese Starbucks introduces pork-flavored coffee
Oh nooo, I’m afraid I’ll be skipping this one. In any case, I’m not always a fan of the crazy things people do with coffee; Starbucks previously pulled a stunt in Italy with coffee with olive oil. That already sounded like nails on a chalkboard to me, but I find this one even worse. Coffee. With. Pork flavor.
The flavor is described as ‘interesting’, and I don’t even need to taste it to find that a suspicious description. Could this possibly taste good in any way? A reporter from CNN put it to the test.
Very pricey
And such a cup of coffee also comes with a hefty price tag. One cup costs the equivalent of around nine euros, and it won’t become a permanent fixture on the menu: this ‘Abundant Year Savory Latte’ is only available temporarily for the Chinese New Year.
The coffee is made with a sauce of braised pork, which is then mixed with espresso and steamed milk, topped with some extra pork sauce and pieces of pork. Yes, exactly what you want in your coffee; tasty chunks. Especially pork chunks… Honestly, in the photo it may look like an ordinary latte with an unusual garnish, but don’t let that fool you if you happen to be in China.
Well, or do try it — and be sure to let us know what it tastes like. And coffee with olive oil? On second thought, I might actually try that. My colleague Jeske is completely sold: ‘it makes your coffee super creamy!’
