Super-creamy coffee? Add this surprising (savory!) ingredient

A weak cup of dishwater? A coffee drinker’s worst nightmare. Of course, good beans already make a huge difference. And a good brewing method works wonders too. But there are more ways to perk up your coffee. What you need is… olive oil. It makes your coffee incredibly creamy.

Indeed: milk does that too. We recently gave you tips for making the milk in your coffee even more delicious. Add olive oil to your milk and you get silky-smooth coffee that commands respect. Steaming olive oil and milk together creates a light, foamy emulsion in your coffee. Did you know this also makes it easier to create latte art? Frothed milk without olive oil collapses much faster. So go ahead and take that bottle of (ridiculously expensive) olive oil out of the cupboard.

A bite of liquid pasta?

Well, do pay attention to what kind of olive oil you use. A mild olive oil is best in this case. That way, you taste as little of the olive oil flavor as possible. Worried you’ll end up swallowing a bite of liquid pasta? No need. Yes, you’ll taste the olive oil slightly in the background. But you’ll mainly notice that the olive oil balances out the bitterness and acidity of the coffee. As long as you don’t add too much—and don’t use an olive oil that’s too strong.

Let’s get frothing

A teaspoon of olive oil is really enough. Combine it with cow’s milk or oat milk: in terms of flavor, those are the best matches. You can add your milk-and-olive-oil mixture to your coffee in 3 ways. The first is with a coffee machine with a steam wand or a milk frother. Not a coffee nerd with these tools at home? Then get the blender out of the cupboard. Because it can do so much more than just make smoothies and soups. Pour the milk and olive oil into your blender, switch it on and watch the mixture turn into delicious foam.

If you don’t have that at home either (how do you survive in the kitchen?!), a spoon or whisk works wonders too. Whisk vigorously for a moment and the magic happens all by itself.
