Research shows: these are the most popular Christmas markets among the Dutch
Jingle all the way! And preferably at a cozy Christmas market. Wonderful: strolling past stalls and Christmas choirs with a steaming mulled wine in your hand. We absolutely love it in the Netherlands. Our favorite Christmas market destination? Düsseldorf, according to research by Preply.
The research agency investigated which Christmas markets were googled most often in 2023. It turns out that Düsseldorf comes out on top by a mile, with 110,000 searches per month. Holy shit. If all those searchers actually go to Düsseldorf’s Christmas market, I think it’ll be more shuffling along in a line than strolling.
Christmas markets in Germany
It probably won’t surprise you, but Germany is the most popular country when it comes to Christmas markets. Apart from 2 places, the top 10 is completely filled with German Christmas markets. The Christmas markets in Oberhausen, Cologne, Munster, Aachen, Dortmund, Essen and Bremen all feature on the list. So pack your bags: for the best Christmas magic, we need to head east! (Or don’t, if all that crowds make you turn into a Grinch sooner.)
Uhm… and the Netherlands?
The top 10 also includes two Christmas markets in Belgium: those in Antwerp and Bruges. A little easier to reach for Christmas fans from the south of our country. Feel like looking farther afield? Then take the plane (or train) to London, Berlin, Paris, Vienna or Edinburgh. Apparently, these Christmas markets make us very happy too.
Notable: the Christmas festivities in places like Maastricht, Amsterdam and Haarlem don’t appear on the list. In fact, there aren’t any Dutch Christmas markets in the top 10—not even in the top 30. Don’t we think nearby is good enough? Or can nothing compare to the Christmas magic in Germany? In any case, I’m keeping things nice and close to home this year, at the Christmas Beer Market in Breda. With mulled beer and beer oliebollen. I don’t need to cross the German border for that.
