Ron Blaauw wins RTL Snackmasters with iconic snack
No less than one of FavorFlav’s favorite chefs has won the Snackmasters 2021 cooking competition on RTL: Ron Blaauw! For weeks, various well-known chefs worked tirelessly to perfectly recreate iconic snacks, and after an exciting final, this hero emerged as the winner…
Ron Blaauw is no stranger to serious snacking (remember his frikandellen dinner?). And which snack did he win the competition with? His winning typically Dutch (with an Indonesian background)… (drumroll)… borrelnootje! The turning point in the perfecting process and decisive factor for the champion’s trophy: ‘the crunch’. Once he had mastered that, the battle was decided. Although Blaauw did not even consider the borrelnoot the most difficult challenge of the entire series! So what was?
Sweet nightmare
The (sweet) marshmallow. When he saw in one of the earlier episodes that this would be the next challenge, his courage sank. “This is the end,” he thought, “this will be my downfall.” Because working with sugar is not his forte, he explains. But that wretched marshmallow did not cost him his head!
How do you get that crunch?
And so he made it to the final, with the humble borrelnootje occupying his thoughts day and night for weeks. It was no easy task to separate the peanut from the coating and perfect the crisp crunch. But when they achieved it, it truly felt euphoric, he tells AD.
Serious snack business
As a star chef, he says he certainly takes snacks seriously in that sense because “a snack like that ultimately also comes from passion. We must never lose sight of that.” In any case, it was a wonderful project for him and his loyal team: after the extremely miserable period that lockdown was for the hospitality industry, they were able to do something positive and unifying together. According to Blaauw, some chefs did not want to participate for fear of making a fool of themselves, but he is convinced that you have to keep busy and work toward something together.
Triumphal tour
The borrelnootjes will also be served in the restaurants (with a wink). Many people watched the program and will recognize them and cheer up because of them, and once again Ron Blaauw has shown his positive and technically outstanding side. Go team!!
