Side effect of eating ice cream – you won’t expect this

IJSJE

Too many calories, too fatty, too sweet: yes, yes, we know that ice cream doesn’t measure up to quinoa and kale when it comes to power food. But it is delicious, so you give in anyway. Watch out, because ice cream has another downside, and you may not have been aware of it.

Side effect of ice cream

The American Heart Association, the American Heart Foundation, is investigating the link between diet and sleep. Research by the Association showed that consuming a lot of calories leads to poorer sleep. In general, people who eat unhealthily sleep considerably less, and during the hours they do sleep, they do not rest well because they sleep less deeply or very restlessly. Oh dear, that’s not good!

Sugar culprit

Sugar, in particular, appears to be a culprit. The food diaries kept by the subjects show that very few people sleep well when they have eaten a lot of sugar in a day. Sugar seems to make you wake up frequently during the night in particular. Apparently, too much sugar disrupts your sleep patterns: REM sleep starts later, body temperature remains too high and melatonin levels are too low.

Cooling down

It may well be related to body temperature, conclude the researchers from the Journal of Biological Rhythms. When you go to sleep, your body temperature drops. But a few hours after you have eaten a lot of sugar, your temperature rises instead. And what is the last sweet dish of the day? Exactly: ice cream.

Ceiling

If you eat chocolate ice cream, you may not get a wink of sleep. Chocolate contains caffeine and theobromine, two substances that make you more alert. If you are sensitive to them and eat ice cream with lots of chocolate or chocolate sauce on top, you will notice it when you are lying in bed, desperately staring at the ceiling.
