Handy: how to stop your coaster sticking to your drink

In the category of ‘minor annoyances’: a coaster that sticks to the bottom of your glass and then, just as you bring your drink to your mouth, comes loose. A bouncing coaster, a puddle of condensation from your glass all over your trousers and a red face, because of course everyone is watching this spectacle.

Especially likely on a hot day: you put your glass on a coaster and when you want to take a sip of your soft drink or long drink, the coaster stays stuck to your glass. This is caused by condensation and the moisture on the outside of your rinsed glass, which creates a vacuum between your glass and the coaster.

Smooth sticks more

If the coasters are smooth, the chance of them sticking is greater. You should not have this problem as quickly with a cardboard beer mat, but every café-goer knows that those beer mats in the pub stick just as firmly as a plastic or wooden coaster at home.

Wipe with a napkin

The solution: wipe your glass dry. Fortunately, you always get napkins at a cocktail bar so you can make sure there is no water on the bottom of your cocktail glass or long-drink glass. The downside: those napkins will definitely stick to your glass; they simply get sucked onto it.

Sticky hands

Want to tackle the sticking-coaster problem thoroughly? Sprinkle salt over your coaster. This breaks the surface tension of the layer of water, so your beer mat no longer sticks. Especially handy when you are walking around with your glass: no dangling beer mat, no wet stain on your clothes and no sticky hands. Who’s going to try it?
