This is the glass every bubble snob wants in their cupboard
True enthusiasts (they also call themselves snobs) have known for a long time: a beautiful champagne deserves the perfect glass. So while the rest of us are already happy to have six matching flutes in the cupboard (er, me too), the true connoisseur knows that for beautiful champers to really come into its own, a tapered glass that closely resembles a wine glass is essential.
And within that category, there are of course variations that enthusiasts go absolutely wild for. Earlier, our self-proclaimed resident bubble snob Sharon wrote an enlightening article about which glasses are best for champagne and where you can order them. And yes, that includes a coupe, but that is mainly intended for champagne cocktails and looking pretty, because the coupe shape itself is the death of the bubbles. And Riedel, the Austrian glassware brand that has been making glasses for all types of wine for eleven (!) generations, has now come up with a new and extremely chic champagne glass, specially designed for drinking champagne with dinner:
Bring on the bubbles
Because although it is great fun to drink a glass of champagne as an aperitif at a ‘quality drinks gathering’ (so with beautifully arranged snack boards, and not necessarily with a bowl of KFC spicy chicken bitterballen) or as the inevitable duo with oliebollen on New Year’s Eve, it is high time we also started seeing champagne as something you drink at the table, with delicious food.
Flying high
That is also what Riedel wants to convey. Their latest high-flyer is the High Performance champagne glass, which will literally tower above most wine glasses on the table. It has a tall, naturally thin stem, but the ‘hand feel’ suggests good balance, partly thanks to the pleasantly broad foot. With this shape and height, Riedel is making it clear that they consider champagne just as appropriate at dinner as red and white wine. And there is no doubt about how the champagne itself comes into its own in this specific glass: absolutely perfect, according to the review by luxury lifestyle platform Robb Report.
It’s a party in the stem
To make things even more festive, Riedel has released the glasses with different stem colors to choose from: a black crystal stem, a red stem, and a neutral one. I think you also need to perform pretty high salary-wise to add these glasses to your shopping cart: they cost € 99 each. I’m not quite snobby enough for that yet, but they probably make for delicious drinking!
