Smart: restaurant in Istanbul puts corona-proof domes on its terrace

Restaurants all over the world are struggling with the same problem: keeping a safe distance between guests while still creating a cosy atmosphere. A restaurant in Istanbul has come up with a smart solution. There is a glass dome over every table.

Restaurants in Turkey also closed down in March. At the beginning of June, they were cautiously allowed to reopen, but strict precautionary measures were announced. So, what then? This restaurant owner had a brilliant idea: glass domes. They cover all the tables on the restaurant’s two terraces. The domes have been decorated with some lights and plastic plants, the staff wear plastic caps and face masks, and this makes everything both safe and cosy. An added bonus: the view over the Bosphorus. Just take a look at how lovely it is to sit there in this video of the ‘Igloo restaurant’.
Boiling hot in the greenhouse
The domes are somewhat reminiscent of the five mini-greenhouses set up by the arts and cultural institution Mediamatic. Two people can eat in each greenhouse, while the staff remain outside. The glass domes in Turkey are probably more comfortable than Mediamatic’s greenhouses, because there is a fan hanging from the ceiling of the bubbles and an air conditioner in the corner. Makes sense, because it was already 27 degrees and sunny in Istanbul today – the temperature rises sharply behind glass.
