The cash register? You can get a few burns! That was the reaction of the snack bar owner in Rotterdam when she was threatened with a knife. She didn’t hesitate for a second and threw a pan of hot frying oil at the robber, who fled – without any money.

Around midnight, a man came into the snack bar on Schieweg. Not for a kapsalon or a special frikandel; he wanted the contents of the cash register. The snack bar owner remained calm and threw a pan of frying oil at the robber. He took off immediately, but still got a substantial splash of frying oil on his back.

Where do we know that scene from? We immediately had to think of the film Spetters, in which a very young Renée Soutendijk, as the sexy Fientje, forces a motorcycle gang to pay by threatening them with a small saucepan of frying oil. Could the snack bar owner have watched that old film too?
