Snackers, you’re doing great: the frikandel is the most sustainable snack on Earth

In humanity’s search for a more sustainable way of living, food naturally plays a central role too. And if you’re consciously trying to live sustainably but still enjoy eating something like a frikandel, the following may sound like music to your ears…

Because for many people, the frikandel is the ultimate snack, and on FavorFlav the recipes for frikandel toasties, frikandel spring rolls and, really, every article about frikandellen are hugely popular. You guys love ‘em! And what happy news does this eco-footprint specialist have in store for you as a frikandel fan? The frikandel may well be the most sustainable snack on Earth.
Snacking for a better world
The most sustainable snack on Earth—yes, you read that right! Kees Aarts is an entrepreneur and member of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development, and wrote the book De voetprintariër. In it, he explains how, as a consumer, you can try to purchase all products, services and experiences with as little environmental impact as possible. According to Kees, that doesn’t mean you have to give up everything you enjoy, but rather that you try to find balance in other areas by reducing your footprint and putting much less strain on the planet.
Doing great with your by-product
And what does Kees say on the Belgian website Goed Gevoel? A frikandel may well be the most sustainable snack there is. “A brilliant product, perhaps the most sustainable little snack of all. It’s actually nothing more than a processed by-product with a delicious flavour, which makes it greener than most plant-based burgers with a meat-like flavour and texture.”
Fire up the deep fryer
So… Are you dropping your crochet project made from organically responsible cotton to hurry to the nearest snack bar? Or were you never that into this meat stick anyway? Either way, if you find yourself at a proper high frikandel (instead of a high tea) sometime soon, at least you’ll know that, sustainability-wise, you deserve a pat on the back from Kees!
