Snackspert: ‘Albert Heijn’s kebab roll is emptier than my soul’
Eke Bosman, better known as Instagram phenomenon @snackspert, ate his first frikandel as a baby, hates vlammetjes, has devoured at least 1,000 burgers in his life, suspects there is more mayonnaise in his body than blood, and shares his best and worst snack reviews on FavorFlav every other week. This week, one major miss, but also two moments of joy.
Albert Heijn’s kebab roll
Albert Heijn finally has a new snack in the sandwich section! I can no longer remember the last time that happened, but it has finally arrived: kebab rolls can now be found at various Appies! Yes, you read that right, kebab rolls. And it is a huge disappointment. There is an unprecedented lack of flavour in the roll; the meat has as much bite as a defender who has already let that one striker score four times, even though it was their job to mark them. The dough brings to mind the Dutch National Sand-Swallowing Championships, and there is also a very strange watery tomato flavour, making you think after every bite: this is emptier than my soul. No, it is truly a dreadful snack. ⭐️

Mora veggie crispy chicken
May I have your attention for a moment? Because we have a winner here. A product that could be called the Satisfyer Pro 2 of supermarket snacks. Mora has been offering its delicious Crispy Chick’n (highly recommended, seriously!) in vegetarian form for a while now. And by now we know that supermarket chicken is really easy to imitate, because most veggie chicken is genuinely delicious—but this is one of the better ones. The vegetarian crispy chick’n is tender, wonderfully crispy, the outer layer is salty enough—God, this is good. If there is one downside, it is that the wheat-and-pea texture is still missing just a little flavour. Perhaps they should release a spicy version of this one too. Keep up the good work, Mora. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

Dodoni halloumi burgers
I think too little halloumi is eaten and served in the Netherlands, even though it really is one of the best cheeses in the world. Or so I think. You can grill this Cypriot cheese, and it does not melt. It has such a creamy yet firm flavour. So I was incredibly happy to come across these Dodoni halloumi burgers at Appie. You do have to buy the buns yourself, but four burger slices can make your morning/afternoon/evening entirely better. It is typically the kind of snack that barely disappoints, although I find this one from Dodoni to have a slightly too rubbery texture. But there is nothing to criticise about the flavour. It brings just as much pleasure as a video in which a plumber visits someone and actually repairs the leaking tap. Solid and good, in other words. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
