Snackspert is lyrical: this pita gyros is truly sublime

Eke Bosman, better known as Instagram phenomenon @snackspert, ate his first frikandel as a baby, hates vlammetjes, has already devoured at least 1,500 burgers in his life, suspects that there is more mayonnaise in his body than blood, and shares his best and worst snack reviews on FavorFlav. Today, he tells you about a sublime pita gyros and ate a nostalgic berenhap from the chip shop.

Berenhap from Stap Us In, Eindhoven

Those snack bars where time has stood still, making you feel as though you’ve been transported straight back to your childhood. Back when there were no worries, except for the answer to the question of whether you were allowed to play World of Warcraft that same evening or not. I got that nostalgic feeling when I was at Stap Us In in Eindhoven. As if I had gone back to 2003—wonderful. I ordered the special gehaktbal (I always call it what the snack bar itself calls it), also known as the berenhap, berenpoot, berenklauw or dee spoetnik. But really, this is the neglected little snack of the selection, isn’t it? And honestly, it could be much better. The minced meat at Stap Us In is genuinely good, nicely seasoned and well fried. The special sauce is also excellent, well balanced—don’t change a thing. The onions, however, are fried a little too intensely. You want them to be soft, while keeping their flavour intact. Here, they taste a little too burnt. But it’s not that big a problem, because I’d happily order it again. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Funghi pizza swirls from Jumbo

I genuinely don’t know whether I’ll manage to review all the possible party snacks before Christmas. One is temporarily available and the other is a permanent fixture, but anyway, let’s separate as much wheat from the chaff as possible. Jumbo has pizza swirls that you pop in the oven and—just like that—a mini pizza in your mouth. Is it any good? Well. It’s tasty, but after five minutes you’ve already forgotten exactly what it tasted like. A bit of cheese, a bit of tomato, a decent mushroom, and nothing more than that. It’s also a shame that they’re more like mini wraps, given how soft the dough is. It would have been better if they were a little crispier, but oh well, that’s for next year. A decent snack, but not a winner. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Pita gyros from Vlees noch Visch, Amsterdam

They were already at the first edition of Best Kept Secret in 2013 and have never left my heart since: Vleesch noch Visch. You can spot them as a food truck at various food festivals, but what many people don’t know is that they also spend some time on Van Hallstraat, at a small kiosk. And yes, I can’t resist putting them in the spotlight for a moment. Because this, dear people, this is another one of those. One of those things you simply must try at some point in your life. Vleesch noch Visch was already making fantastic vegan snacks before veganism had even become a subject of debate among certain people who would say, “huhuhuhuhuuee vegan is taking over everything.” It was already here! And you know what? This vegetarian and vegan gyros is truly sublime. The gyros is as smooth as your first wine gum ever, and the tzatziki is deliciously creamy yet wonderfully fresh, but honestly, I don’t understand why there’s rocket in it. I like rocket, especially in Italy, but in the Netherlands it’s sooo bitter. Maybe I’m the only one, but here it really isn’t as tasty as in Mediterranean countries. Anyway. That’s the only thing. A delicious pita, which is also lovely and soft yet sturdy. A bit like that nice toilet paper from the supermarket. Soft and sturdy. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
