Snackspert: ‘Kiwi as a snack? Just have the mini frikandel roll!’

Eke Bosman, better known as Instagram phenomenon @snackspert, ate his first frikandel as a baby, hates vlammetjes, has already devoured at least 1,000 burgers in his life, suspects there is more mayonnaise in his body than blood, and normally shares his snack reviews on FavorFlav every other week.

Mini frikandel roll, Albert Heijn
Once you become a little wiser and smarter in life—and that is a relative concept, because I still can’t manage to make the bed properly… But what I’m mainly trying to say is that I no longer get a frikandel roll an average of three times a week. Because, you know, health and all that. But guys, thank God: Albert Heijn now also sells MINI FRIKANDEL ROLLS! So ideal! Forget having a kiwi as a snack, forget chia seeds in yoghurt, you should simply choose the brown fruit called the mini frikandel roll. And since I’m a fan of the ones from Albert Heijn, I feel like I’m in heaven. Because honestly: sometimes a whole one is just a little too much of a good thing. A mini version comes in handy then. I do have to say that the smaller version has caused the meat-to-sauce balance to shift slightly in favour of the meat, so if I may offer one point of criticism: more curry sauce. Other than that, I’m very happy this exists. Spread the word, let your friends know this exists. Do it. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Double Quarter Pounder and bitterballen, McDonald’s
It’s time for new McDonald’s snacks! Yes, finally, here we are again! And I’m very happy about it, because the selection has been really sparse lately. This time I have the Double Quarter Pounder and bitterballen in front of me. And the weird thing is: I find myself thinking of David Chang, the top chef from Momofuku. He once said in an episode of the Netflix series Ugly Delicious (a viewing tip!): “I love the best pizzas in New York, but I can enjoy Domino’s just as much.” And that’s how I feel about McDonald’s too. Especially the Quarter Pounder, man, that’s really my favourite. And now there’s a Double Quarter Pounder too: as if you get to make out with a supermodel not once, but twice (!!!). Double the fun. That combination of onion, pickle, melted cheese (and now actually melted!) and that delicious tomato sauce, but twice over: so good, man. And yes, the meat could be a little better. A little juicier. But let me enjoy this for a moment, this is my David Chang moment. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Then there’s the other new item: the bitterballen! Apparently McDonald’s also had bitterballen during the 2014 World Cup, but I missed those. Although, judging by what followers tell me, that bitterbal was a failed mini version of the McKroket. I can now guarantee that these McDonald’s bitterballen, with perfectly decent mustard, by the way, are actually pretty okay. They remind me of Van Dobben bitterballen. Not perfect, but simply good. That’s already an improvement compared with the last time they sold them. I approve. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Guacamole chips, Doritos

If this continues, we’ll seriously end up with frikandel-roll-flavoured crisps in 2028, and honestly: I’m looking forward to that. Now, in July 2020, we have something a little less shocking but still slightly crazy: Doritos has released guacamole chips, and although I expected to hate them as much as the end of Titanic, I was pleasantly surprised. They have a nice salty flavour with a subtle hint of guacamole. The only downside is that you taste it only at the beginning, so to speak, the millisecond you put one in your mouth, because after that it is replaced by the typical Doritos flavour. But no, it certainly doesn’t replace the classic nachos with guacamole, but it’s a nice snack—with some salsa on the side—on this Sunday afternoon. ⭐️⭐️⭐️
