Snackspert tests Albert Heijn’s new oven baguettes/wraps and it’s not exactly a success

Eke Bosman, better known as Instagram phenomenon @snackspert, ate his first frikandel as a baby, hates vlammetjes, has devoured at least 1,500 burgers in his life, suspects there’s more mayonnaise than blood in his body, and shares his best and worst snack reviews on FavorFlav. This week, Snackspert tells us what he thinks of McDonald’s new Veggie burger and Albert Heijn’s oven snacks.

Albert Heijn oven baguettes
Over the past few weeks, I’ve tried Albert Heijn’s new oven baguettes/wraps, so don’t be alarmed by the expired best-before dates—I can’t eat everything in one day, because I’m also just a human being with a stomach that’s only so big, you know? Anyway.

Let me start with the best one: the chicken kebab baguette is simply banging. Plenty of cheddar—always good news—and the garlic and grilled pepper add a little more flavour to the somewhat simple chicken. But I enjoyed it. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The meatball baguette is good, but the promised tomato sauce with piri-piri spices has about as much kick as a hopeless defender from a relegation candidate in the Portuguese football league. The mozzarella makes up for a lot, though, and the meatballs are perfectly fine. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

As far as I’m concerned, you’re not allowed to call the spicy chicken wrap spicy, because the jalapeño is basically the Frans Bauer of all the peppers we have. Still a tasty wrap, mind you, and definitely well filled, but just call it crazy chicken wrap instead. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

The chicken satay baguette is genuinely the biggest disappointment since the lost penalty shoot-out against Italy during Euro 2000. There’s no satay to be found anywhere, the chilli sauce is tasteless muck, and the chicken is as dry as the libido of a frog forced to watch nature documentaries. Or something. ⭐️
Foodcrib’s junkyarddog

This is the best bratwurst sandwich @chrissyteigen has ever eaten. A few days ago, I saw her post and thought: huh, is there really a little place at Museumplein selling a heavenly sandwich? That piqued my interest. Foodcrib’s junkyarddog is a sandwich with a thin sort of smoked sausage (definitely not bratwurst—that’s already a huge mistake, Ms Teigen), sauerkraut, piccalilli, melted cheese and salami. Let me get straight to the point: this sandwich is damn delicious. The bun really is exceptionally soft, so Chrissy got that right. And yes, the combination of sausage and sauerkraut with piccalilli, cheese and salami is a bull’s-eye. But the best ‘bratwurst’ sandwich ever? Nah, no. You are dealing with ingredients that weren’t sourced from a speciality shop, so the salami isn’t straight from Italy, and the smoked sausage was also ‘just’ bought from a wholesaler. And that’s a shame, considering the sky-high price of this sandwich. Use sausage from Brandt & Levie, for example. But still. Still! Still, this is a deliciously greasy and sloppy sandwich that you really crave when you have a hangover. Or jet lag because you’ve just returned from the United States. All in all, pleasantly surprised. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Homestyle crispy chicken and McDonald’s homestyle crispy chicken veggie
- De ‘normale’ variant
- De Veggie variant
And ‘finally’, a ‘new’ burger at McDonald’s! It’s a new version of the homestyle crispy chicken, this time the Mexican version. I already complained about McDonald’s lack of originality last month, so in this post I’ll just focus on the burgers themselves. I tried both the chicken and veggie versions. Here we go!
The chicken version is fine. The bun is good, but with a Mexican burger I do expect at least a little bit of spice, guys—we’re not Ria with that crazy hairstyle who orders a frikandel from the kids’ menu at the Chinese restaurant. That’s a shame, but the pico de gallo sauce (a mixture of tomato and onion, topped up with lime juice) has a very pleasant sweet flavour. I was afraid the guacamole would make it taste far too creamy, but the sauces are honestly well balanced here. Well done. I also think the addition of nachos is a good one, as they provide a crunchy bite. The meat, on the other hand, is a slight disappointment in my opinion. I seem to remember that the chicken in the homestyle crispy chicken was much more tender years ago. Now it seems to be a collection of randomly assembled pieces of chicken that just happen to have been fried. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

And that’s why, honestly, I think the veggie homestyle crispy chicken Mexican is a lot better. The sauce is great here too, the nachos are once again an excellent addition, but the patty (as they call it abroad and increasingly often here) is also much juicier than the meat version. Say what?! So yes, I’m actually arriving at a rather surprising conclusion: just get the veggie. You’ll get more out of it. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
