Toot, toot: this petrol station sells the tastiest hamburger in the Netherlands

Hamburger bij Tankstation Scheiwijk

Eke Bosman, better known as Instagram phenomenon @snackspert, ate his first frikandel as a baby, hates vlammetjes, has devoured at least 1,500 burgers in his lifetime, suspects there is more mayonnaise in his body than blood, and shares his best and worst snack reviews on FavorFlav every other week. And the very, very tastiest hamburger in the Netherlands? According to this snack expert, you’ll find it along the A27!

Vegetarian fish fingers from Iglo

Until now, I hadn’t found any genuinely good vegetarian fish from the supermarket, but I can already reveal that Iglo’s new range is going to make quite an impression. Because these vegetarian fish fingers are excellent. No, really. No tough texture—in fact, quite the opposite—and no strange aftertaste. But perhaps that’s because I had garlic sauce with them, because yes, at the weekend—especially after drinking—you’re supposed to stink up the place, unless, of course, you have to go to a convivial Sunday afternoon family birthday gathering where nothing but Amstel beer is drunk. Right, I’m getting sidetracked. An important caveat is that a ‘normal’ fish finger is of course also a fairly simple product, so replicating it can’t have been a complicated process. That said, this is a really lovely option for all the vegetarians and vegans among us. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ ½

Snacks from Emmanuel Snackbar, Amsterdam

Rembrandtplein. 2:32 a.m. You’ve just thrown up because you French-kissed some gross person at the Cooldown Café and then had a shot of tequila, and suddenly you feel a little sober again. And therefore hungry. Believe me, you’d do well to go to Emmanuel Snackbar near Rembrandtplein in Amsterdam. Because those fries are heeeavenly. Believe me. So crispy, so fresh, such a great potato flavour—absolute perfection. The satay sauce could have used a bit more kick as far as I’m concerned, but these are genuinely some of the better fries in the city centre. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ ½

The pikanto, on the other hand, is a little strange. Weirdly cut to begin with, but also dry inside. Something went wrong there. Shame! ⭐️⭐️

The kaassoufflé? Just fine. I could tell you a long story now, but that would be of absolutely no use to you. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

And that frikandel speciaal? That wasn’t for me, but for my mate. And he thought it was very tasty. I’ll take his word for it. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Big Boss Double Burger from Scheiwijk voor Fijnproevers

HOLD ON A SECOND. There’s a petrol station in the Netherlands where the word ‘pumping’ has quite a double meaning. Petrol station Scheiwijk on the A27 deserves to be designated national heritage in 60 years, because never in my life have I passed a petrol station like this one. The highly respected food journalist @HiskeVersprille wrote a fantastic piece about this place in de Volkskrant a few months ago, so you could actually say this review is redundant, but hey, I just want to emphasise once again that this is the place to be. Because: the Big Boss Double Burger is so insanely good that in various places around the world they could figuratively turn off the gas supply. But jokes aside, it’s a fantastic burger. Cooked on the Big Green Egg; the meat is thin, juicy, tender and delicious. The bacon is wonderfully crispy, the chilli mayonnaise (I want chilli mayo on a burger more often) is heavenly, and the figurative cherry on the cake—uh, the figurative cheese on the pizza—is the Parmesan. What a fantastic addition. When you consider the price-quality-expectation ratio, you can only conclude that this is the best petrol-station sandwich in the Netherlands. Go! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
