Snackspert: “This, ladies and gentlemen, is a gem. A takeaway gem. Maximum score!”

Eke Bosman, better known as Instagram phenomenon @snackspert, ate his first frikandel as a baby, hates vlammetjes, has already devoured at least 1,000 burgers in his lifetime, suspects there is more mayonnaise in his body than blood, and shares his best and worst snack reviews on FavorFlav every other week.

Vegetarian smoked sausage from Hema

Yes, smoked sausage without the R is Also Sausage, and there will undoubtedly be a few people saying, ‘no, then it’s wost!!!’ But hey, HEMA’s marketing campaign for the vegetarian smoked sausage can certainly be called a ‘success’. They have my attention. But in the end, it’s about the product itself. Because the vegetarian smoked sausages currently available in supermarkets apparently aren’t exactly great, but perhaps HEMA’s is the breakthrough of 2020. At least we experienced something fun this year (apart from the metro ending up on a work of art, of course). Right, what’s it like? Fine. The iconic smoked sausage flavor is certainly somewhat recognizable, but not well enough in my opinion. Just a little too sour—it tasted a bit more like sauerkraut than smoked sausage. The original sausage actually has just as distinctive a flavor as the frikandel, and that is difficult to imitate, so this (minor) shortcoming is certainly understandable. But: I see potential. The product isn’t quite there yet, but it is fine. And that earns a passing grade from me. It really can be that simple. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Fries with zoervleis from Gebr. Hartering in Amsterdam

It is wonderful to see so many people getting takeaway from the hospitality industry during these difficult times, because they deserve it so much. And I too hope to do my bit. And yes, for people in Amsterdam, things are currently not too bad when it comes to takeaway or ordering: one excellent restaurant after another is suddenly offering delicious dinners for pickup, but they are also offering snacks! Such as restaurant Gebr. Hartering, a highly regarded place in Amsterdam, which is now offering, among other things, fries with zoervleis (read: sour meat). I only give the maximum rating when I have a STAB ME IN THE SIDE BECAUSE THIS IS DELICIOUSSSSS moment, and that was definitely the case here. Right after the first bite, I knew we were dealing with something unbelievably delicious. The fries are thick, but incredibly well-seasoned and crispy. The zoervleis is sour in a very pleasant way, and after every bite you find yourself wanting more. The homemade mayonnaise, on the other hand, is not too sour, making the dish perfectly balanced. Oh, and for everyone who says, “Yeah, but you get the real thing in Limburg!” Yes, true, but Gebr. Hartering is run by people from Limburg. There you go. This, ladies and gentlemen, is a gem. A takeaway gem. Let’s make #afhaaljuweel trending quickly. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Sinterklaas chips from Aldi

Sinterklaas is back in the country, so we can once again expect plenty of chocolate (letters) in our shoes, but THANK GOD there is finally a new Sinterklaas snack again. After having the croquette letter last year and reviewing the somewhat less tasty Sinterklaas-Mexicano-style snack a few years ago, there are finally Sinterklaas chips from Aldi too! Yes, Aldi! And I am pleasantly surprised. Why? Because it really is something new! In the photo, you think: those are Hamka’s. But no, it is just a little different. It has been given a paprika twist, which gives these savory snacks a rather unique flavor. A mix of Hamka’s and paprika. And with the comparable texture of those popular Hamka’s chips, that is very pleasant. I would definitely recommend bringing them home, because in my opinion these can join the list of ‘nice supermarket chips, greetings from Hennie’. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
