Snackspert: “You actually can’t and shouldn’t sell something like this”

Seriously divine
Atomic Zombie, Kip it Real burger and Mac ‘n The Beef Chief

As if the gates of heaven had been closed for a few months, but are open again now. That’s what it feels like. Because the fact that The Beef Chief in Amsterdam-Noord is open again is a gift from heaven. Anyone who has read even a few of my reviews over the past few years knows: this place serves the best burgers in the Netherlands—well, Europe even. What you see in the first photo is the Atomic Zombie. A burger with bacon, bacon jam(!), soft onions, chipotle ketchup (so slightly spicy) and melted American cheddar. And if this photo makes you think of the best porn video ever, I can’t blame you. Because it tastes like incredibly sexy meat too. The bacon is thick but crispy, and that thickness makes for a better fatty flavor. The meat is so juicy it makes you think of a sultry summer night. The sauce is so delicious you want to hug it, oh man. And that bun, boys and girls: as if you’re allowed to try out a brand-new pillow in bed for the first time. Fresh out of the box. This is genuinely the best bacon burger I’ve eaten in years. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Big Mac, McDonald’s

It’s time for a new Big Mac review. I seem to remember reviewing it a few years ago because of the addition of bacon for its 50th anniversary, but now that McDonald’s is loudly proclaiming in its TV commercials that it tastes better than ever, I feel challenged. And yes, in reality nothing has changed, but now that we can finally actually sit inside McDonald’s again, surely such a little burger would taste just like it used to. Right? Yes, that’s exactly right. Just like it used to. But as you may be able to see in the photo, in 2020 we’re really ready for an updated recipe rather than something old-fashioned. Over the past 10 years, we’ve seen unprecedented development in burger joints and in the quality of hamburgers themselves, so you have to wonder: is the Big Mac still a classic in this day and age? Yes and no: the sauce remains unparalleled, it’s still heavenly, but the meat really doesn’t cut it anymore. Such a dry little patty, meh. The really strange thing, though, is that this hamburger still tastes so good, but you know it could be better. Like looking at your ex from five years ago and thinking they’ve remained stuck in the past. You know that feeling. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Food for the trash

Pizza buns, Lidl

Say the words pizza buns and I say TAKE MY MONEY, because almost anything with pizza is just insanely delicious. Okay, except satay pizza or pizza cheese fondue, the only two pizzas that have ever made me lean over a toilet. But I’ll spare you the details. Let’s talk about these pizza buns from Lidl. They can’t disappoint, right? But nothing could be further from the truth: these ‘herb and mozzarella’ buns create just as much emptiness as the existence of a politician who is anti-whatever one day and anti-the-opposite-of-anti-whatever the next. Still following? What a disappointment. It’s simply a bite of dough with a little herb-baguette flavor inside. Nothing more, nothing less. You actually can’t and shouldn’t sell something like this. I love Lidl—they have amazing products—but this is genuinely an amazingly bad product. ⭐️
