Snackspert’s week: ‘Is this the must-go at IKEA’s restaurant?’

Seriously divine
Chicken satay, IKEA Amersfoort

Yes, Zoetermeer looks unbelievably depressing, but just take a look at this. This is the chicken satay with fries and some vegetables (even I doubt whether this is actually vegetables) from IKEA, and anyone who follows my page closely knows that my review of the fish and chips last time was just as scathing as Badr Hari’s loss to Rico Verhoeven. But don’t worry: the chicken satay is actually pretty decent. Look, it’s not the chicken satay you’d normally get at the better Asian joints, but for this price—and considering we’re sitting in a massive furniture store—it’s really quite good. I really appreciate the generous amount of satay sauce, because the more, the better. Especially when it comes to satay sauce; I can never get enough of it. And the fries were also slightly less depressing than last time. Crispier, mainly. But is this the must-go at IKEA’s restaurant? Nah, then you should simply go for those old-fashioned meatballs. So I say: rather have a few balls in your mouth than chicken satay you thought was okay. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Seriously divine
Garlic butter baguette chips, Lay’s

My first introduction to the garlic butter baguette was in the 10th grade at secondary school. The canteen at Het Vlier in Deventer was just as unhealthy as the average McDonald’s, and I bought snacks there almost every day. You could get a garlic butter baguette there for 1 euro. One of those soft rolls with so much garlic that, as a 15-year-old teenager, you couldn’t make an impression on girls for years afterward. Never mind—I was at least deliriously happy with the food. The great thing about the garlic butter baguette is that it has since become a cult classic, so much of a cult classic that it has had its own chip flavor for years. And oddly enough, I had never reviewed it. Let me ruin your dream and hopes right away: no, it doesn’t taste exactly like a garlic butter baguette. But it does have something of it. A very light version of a crispy piece of garlic butter, nothing more. But that does make it easy to keep eating, I think. I always applaud that, although I would rather have a real garlic butter baguette. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Pizza burger, Tina’s Place in New York

Did I eat anything disappointing in New York? Why yes, that certainly happened once. What? I’m not joking: even in this beautiful city, I ate something that was less tasty than the vegetables your parents made you eat when you were 7 years old. No, Tina’s Place in Brooklyn may be a wonderfully atmospheric and characterful diner, but when it comes to burgers, they’re still at FC Eindhoven level. I ordered a pizza burger, and honestly, if you’d told me this was just a regular burger, I would have believed you. A little cheese on top, tomato sauce underneath, as if nothing was wrong. Nothing pizza-like about it. The bun was limp, the meat was limp, the lettuce came straight from a plastic package, but fortunately the fries were quite decent. Look, you can’t always roll a six in New York, but it is disappointing. ⭐️⭐️
