Snackspert’s week: “Jumbo’s vegetarian frikandel roll gets a hard four stars”

vegetarisch frikandellenbroodje Jumbo

Eke Bosman, better known as Instagram phenomenon @snackspert, ate his first frikandel as a baby, hates vlammetjes, has devoured at least 1,000 burgers in his life, suspects there’s more mayonnaise in his body than blood, and shares his best and worst snack reviews on FavorFlav every other week. This week was a good week, a very good week.

Broodje oorlog from In Between Burgers, Amsterdam

Alright guys, turn off your Zoom meeting or stop texting your tongue buddy for a second, because here’s an important review for when you’re in or live in Amsterdam, because you really don’t want to miss this. No, seriously, no joke. This photo is a real ‘yes, but they’re really hotter in person’ kind of photo, because this broodje oorlog is the hamburger from In Between Burgers, run by the guys from Entrepot in Amsterdam. This is genuinely one of the best burgers you can currently eat in Amsterdam (and yes, The Beef Chief, Rotisserie and Ter Marsch are heavenly too; the competition is becoming fierce). And that while it’s a burger with meat, tomato, pickle and lettuce. It looks very simple, but it isn’t: the quality of the ingredients is so good that it’s genuinely difficult to describe. You immediately know what I mean as soon as you take a bite, because you taste it straight away. That wow factor. What can be described properly is the bun. It’s a potato bun known in the United States, made with, among other things, mashed potatoes. It’s just short of a brioche bun, but it’s not traditional either. So deliciously soft, but not too sweet. Trust me. It’s worth every penny of those 10 euros. And yes, it’s also available vegetarian. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Lekker&Anders Frikandel burger

What did 2020 bring us? Corona, of course, but hopefully in 10 years our children will read in their history books that 2020 was also the year the frikandel burger was launched in supermarkets. Yes, man, isn’t that fantastic? Burger King had the premiere last year with the Freakingdel burger, of course, but now it’s finally on the shelves too—in DekaMarkt, that is, from the Lekker&Anders brand. And how is it? Pretty great. Just like any other tasty frikandel, but on a bun. Then you think: but couldn’t you easily do that with regular frikandels too? Yes, but then it doesn’t quite fit or it’s just too big for a white bread roll. This is almost 1.5 frikandels, so perfectly sized. Add some mayo and, if you like, curry and onions, and you’re guaranteed to have a better evening than someone who binge-watched an entire season of some shitty Netflix series. But that makes sense. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Jumbo’s vegetarian frikandel roll

Something that completely passed me by: Jumbo’s vegetarian frikandel roll! Yes! You read that right: the supermarket has recently started selling not only a regular frikandel roll in the bakery section, but also a vegetarian version. And whereas most vegetarian frikandels in recent years mainly tasted like a one-night stand that was anything but exciting and mostly made you think of the desert in Egypt, this one, thank God, tasted more like a sweet kiss from your beloved. No, really, this is a pleasant surprise. The ‘meat’ has a good, smooth, firm texture, and the curry sauce makes it at least a little juicy. A little, okay. A clear downside, however, is that the pastry is genuinely bone-dry and too thick, which once again makes you think of sand-eating in the desert. Jumbo, you’ve been doing this wrong for years; make the pastry thinner in your snacks. I don’t want to eat sand anymore. But what a relief that the vegetarian frikandel itself makes up for so, so much. No joke. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
